Getting a library card is easy and free.

A library card is free to anyone who lives, works, owns property or goes to school in the Municipality of Port Hope. Library borrowing privileges are also extended to members of Cobourg Public Library. You can get a card by visiting the Circulation Desk at the Mary J. Benson Branch or the The Hub at Canton.

You will need:

  • current identification that includes your name and address
  • a parent's or guardian's signature for children 12 years or younger

Port Hope Public Library welcomes new members of all ages. Sign your kids up as soon as they’re born - it’s a great way to spark a lifetime love of reading.

The Library accepts current forms of identification including:

  • driver’s license
  • utility bill
  • property tax bill
  • rental agreement
  • bank statement or cheques printed with your name and current address
  • school report cards

Please contact the Library to find out what other forms of identification may be acceptable.

Temporary and non-resident memberships are also available.

Port Hope Public Library also offers three-month temporary memberships and non-resident memberships. The fee for a temporary three-month membership is $20.00. Non-residents may join for an annual fee of $50.00 per household.

Lost Library Cards

Your first library card will be free but the replacement fee for a lost card is $5.00 and we ask you to present ID.

Guests are always welcome.

Enjoy our beautiful river view while you read a newspaper at the Mary J. Benson Branch. Explore the rolling hills of Northumberland and drop by The Hub at Canton to catch up on emails from family and friends. Anyone may use the Library’s facilities for research or reading free of charge. Guests may use the Internet at either location free of charge.

The Library strives to provide access to resources, services, and programs in a welcoming atmosphere.

If you have any questions or difficulties during your visit to the Library, please let a staff member know as soon as possible so that we may best help you. Staff members are located at service points within the Library and can supply you with a Comment/Suggestion form should you wish to fill one out.

The Library has established Rules of Conduct to ensure that everyone’s visit is pleasant.
