Borrowing and Fees

Loan Periods

Port Hope Public Library has two loan periods - 3 weeks and 7 days - to ensure that as many patrons as possible have a chance to borrow high-demand items quickly.

The loan period for all material is 3 weeks except:

  • 7 day loans (new bestsellers); renewable for one week only
  • DVDs; renewable for one week only
  • Interlibrary loans, which are given a loan period by the lending library; not renewable

Going away for more than 3 weeks?
Ask for an extended loan period when you check out your items at the Circulation Desk.

Holds

You may place a hold:

  • in person, at either branch

We will telephone you to let you know when the item is available for you to pick up or you may sign up for email notifications.

To place a hold by accessing your Library account:

  • search the Library catalogue to see if the Library owns the title
  • click the Place a Hold icon, and the catalogue will prompt you for your Library card barcode number and the last four digits of your phone number
  • If you are requesting a certain DVD in a series or a specific issue of a magazine click on Request Copy to place the hold. The catalogue will then prompt you for your Library card barcode number and the last four digits of your phone number
Renewals

Too many pages and not enough time? No worries – most Library material is renewable.

In addition to the original 3-week loan, most Library material can be renewed twice, giving you 9 weeks to enjoy your choices. New Fiction and DVDs, on 7 day loan, are only renewable for an extra week loan.

You may renew items:

  • when you visit the Library and present your library card
  • online by accessing your account through the Library catalogue
  • by phoning 905.885.4712 and giving your library card number

Be sure to renew items by their due date to avoid being charged a late fine.

The following items are not renewable:

  • Any item that another patron has requested
  • Interlibrary loans
Returns

You’ve finished it, now where do you return it?

Library material borrowed from the Mary J. Benson or Garden Hill Branch may be returned to either location. Items may be returned in the Library or in the Drop Box. Each branch has a Drop Box with ample access.

The Drop Box at the Mary J. Benson Branch is located at the south-west corner of the building, just off the parking lot. The drop box is open when the Branch is closed.

The Drop Box at the Garden Hill Branch is located to the right of the door. The drop box is open 24/7.

Please note that fines will apply to all overdue material returned in the Drop Box.

Avoid fines by renewing items on time!
