Marching To A Different Drummer
March 19 Grey Gardens (2009) 1 hr 44 min.
Documentary filmmaking brothers change the focus of their latest project from Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis to her aunt and older cousin: mother and daughter Edith “Big Edie” Bouvier Beale (Jessica Lange) and Edith “Little Edie” Bouvier Beale (Drew Barrymore), who are living in squalor and isolation in the longtime family mansion, Grey Gardens, in East Hampton, New York.
Won 2 Golden Globes and a Primetime Emmy. The real “Little Edie” was once asked who she’d want to portray her mother in a movie, and suggested Ethel Barrymore, Drew Barrymore's great-aunt, who died in 1959. As music teacher George “Gould” Strong, Malcolm Gets wears a diamond ring; it’s the actual ring Edith Beale gave Strong in real life. In New York, Little Edie lives in the Barbizon Hotel, an apartment building for young single women; others who lived there include Joan Crawford, Grace Kelly, Candice Bergen, and author Sylvia Plath.
