June 25 The Ladykillers (1955) 1 hr 31 min.
A gang planning a heist find themselves living with a little old lady, Mrs. Wilberforce (Katie Johnson), who thinks they are musicians. They set out to kill Mrs. Wilberforce, but find that what they thought would be a simple murder runs them into one problem after another…
Nominated for Best Screenplay Oscar. Stars Alec Guinness, Peter Sellers, Herbert Lom, Frankie Howerd, and Cecil Parker. The producers rejected Katie Johnson for the role of Mrs. Wilberforce on the grounds she was too frail, and cast a younger actress—who died before filming could begin! Mrs. Wilberforce's birds were voiced by Peter Sellers. The roses seen in the opening credits are a nod to William Rose, writer of the screenplay. The minuet supposedly being rehearsed by the “musician” crooks is Luigi Boccherini's Quintet in E Major, Op.11, No. 5. Posing as a viola quintet, the crooks out of ignorance use the wrong combination of instruments for performing the minuet.
