April 3   His Girl Friday (1940) 1 hr 32 min.

After four weeks absent from work, ace reporter Hildy Johnson (Rosalind Russell) walks into the offices of New York City newspaper The Morning Post to tell her boss, editor Walter Burns (Cary Grant), that she’s quitting. She was away to get a Reno divorce from her husband: Walter himself. Hildy will be getting married again tomorrow—but not if Walter can stop her!

Perhaps the first film where characters talked over the lines of other characters, for more realism. Most film dialogue runs around 90 words a minute, but in this movie, it’s 240 words! To maintain the pace, director Howard Hawks encouraged the cast to add dialogue, funny bits of business, and to step on each others’ lines whenever possible. Walter tells the Mayor: “Listen, the last man that said that to me was Archie Leach—just a week before he cut his throat;” Archie Leach was Cary Grant’s real name.
