Free Afternoon Movies - A LITTLE MIRTH AT THE MOVIES
March 6 It Happened One Night (1934) 1 hr 45 minutes
Ellie Andrews (Claudette Colbert) has just tied the knot with society aviator King Westley (Jameson Thomas) when she’s whisked away to her father’s yacht and out of King’s clutches. She jumps ship, and eventually winds up on a bus headed back to her husband, but reluctantly must accept the help of out-of-work reporter Peter Warne (Clarke Gable). Actually, Warne doesn’t give her any choice: either she sticks with him until he gets her back to her husband, or he’ll blow the whistle on Ellie to her father (Walter Connolly). Either way, Peter gets what (he thinks!) he wants: a really juicy newspaper story.
Won 5 Oscars: Best Picture, Actor (Gable), Actress (Colbert), Director (Frank Capra), and Writing (Robert Riskin), plus many more awards and nominations. This was the first movie to accomplish this clean sweep “Grand Slam” of the top 5 Oscars (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in 1976 and The Silence of the Lambs in 1992 are the others). Gable took too long to remove his undershirt filming a scene, so didn’t wear one at all, establishing the fashion for not wearing undershirts (falling sales led some underwear manufacturers to sue Columbia Pictures).
