October 24 Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941) 94 min.
Boxer Joe Pendleton (Robert Montgomery) is a rising boxer, brought up to Heaven too soon by an overzealous angel (Edward Everett Horton). It’s up to Mr. Jordan, the angel’s boss (Claude Rains) to find the boxer a new body so he has another chance at the championship fight. Sent back to Earth, he finds an idealistic and attractive woman (Evelyn Keyes), and things get interesting…
Nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture. Won two Oscars (Best Original Story, Best Screenplay). The 1978 film HEAVEN CAN WAIT, starring Warren Beatty, is practically a word-for-word rewrite of this movie, only changing the boxer to a football player. Both movies were based on the play “Heaven Can Wait.” The tune Pendleton (or Farnsworth) keeps playing (poorly) on his saxophone is "The Last Rose of Summer."
