Free Afternoon Movie
June 19 Strangers In the Night (1944) 56 min.
Sergeant John Meadows, a U. S. Marine paratrooper (William Terry), returns to the USA to meet Rosemary Blake, a girl he’s fallen in love with via correspondence, but never met. On the train, he meets Dr. Leslie Ross (Virginia Grey) and tells her about Rosemary. Rosemary’s mother (Helene Thimig), a crippled and mysterious old lady, tells John her daughter has gone away but will be returning soon. Mrs. Blake seems to have a strange power over her companion, Ivy Miller (Edith Barrett), and John feels uneasy in the Blake house and can’t account for it. And then things get dark and dangerous…
Some critics call this “The very best of the B-movies.” It has one goof: John Meadows is supposed to have just had major back surgery, but when he takes off his shirt, his back has no scars at all.
