Free Afternoon Movie
June 12 Murder, My Sweet (1944) 1 hr 35 min.
Private eye Philip Marlowe (Dick Powell) is hired by Moose Malloy (Mike Mazurki), a petty crook just out of prison after an eight-year stretch, to look for his former girlfriend, Velma (Claire Trevor), who hasn’t been seen for the last six years. The case leads Marlowe into a web of deceit involving bribery, perjury and theft, where no one’s motivation is obvious—least of all Marlowe’s.
This adaptation of the Raymond Chandler novel “Farewell, My Lovely” was renamed for the American market to prevent audiences mistaking it for a musical (for which Powell, the star of this film, was already famous). Dick Powell's portrayal of Philip Marlowe earned the approval of Chandler himself.
