Free Afternoon Movie

May 22 North By Northwest (1959) 2 hr 16 min.

Advertising man Roger Thornhill (Cary Grant) is thrust into the world of spies when he’s mistaken for someone else. Foreign spy Philip Vandamm (James Mason) and henchman Leonard (Martin Landau) try to eliminate Thornhill, who’s framed for murder. On the run, Thornhill manages to board a train where he meets a beautiful blonde, Eve Kendall (Eva Marie Saint), who helps him to evade the authorities. But is Eve the innocent bystander he thought she was?

Nominated for 3 Oscars. Hitchcock couldn't get permission to film the UN, so used a hidden camera to film the exterior of the building—which is why when Cary Grant is at the top of the stairs, a man does a ‘double take’ upon recognizing him. Thanks to its style, this has been called “the first James Bond film.”
